Homes and Condo Mississauga

Toronto

Ten years after closing the doors to the public in 2008, the [David Dunlap Observatory] (DDO) – home of Canada's largest telescope – reopened its facilities to the public .

From today, astronomy enthusiasts can take a public tour of the 100-hectare estate, including the main observation post with copper dome and an administration building with three smaller telescopes.

A crowd of people standing in line for the grand opening of the Observatory in Richmond Hill today, excited to explore the renovated grounds.

It has been ten years since the University of Toronto (which built the observatory in 1935) the DDO to Corsica Development in a controversial deal where drivers, residents and conservationists of Richmond Hill are fighting to prevent builders from unpacking the country.

In the years that followed, observatory workers were fired, trees were illegally logged by developers and volunteer groups were formed in the aftermath of what Richmond Hill Mayor David Barrow described as "grabbing cash" from T & # 39; s "cash."

Fortunately for defenders of the dome, the city has the location a historic building and Corsica eventually half transferred from the property back to the city of Richmond Hill.

Future plans include converting half of the site into a destination park with astronomy theme with an amphitheater, extra walking paths and a "star trail" with a low light level that lights up when you walk with it.

But before that happens, there are plenty of ways in which the visitor can marvel at the views of the night sky. The observatory offers public programs such as Star Talk Nights, where you can view the sky through telescopes on the lawn.
